Boston Bruins vs. Philadelphia Flyers: Fenway Park, Boston, Massachusetts

2010 NHL Winter Classic Hockey Game2010 Winter Classic - Rarely is there a new sporting event that is as great a success as the NHL Winter Classic. Fighting hangovers, snow and blizzard-like conditions, more than 71,000 fans attended the inaugural event on New Years Day, 2008 at Ralph Wilson Stadium. As great as that event was, the 2009 NHL Winter Classic at Wrigley Field was an even greater success. The 2010 event looks even more promising.

Keeping with tradition, the 2010 NHL Winter Classic will be held on the first day of 2010 at 1 p.m. ET. This year the Boston Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers will face off outdoors under the Green Monster at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts.

This year’s event will include two attractions that weren’t present in the first two Winter Classics: public skating and a college hockey game. With the public having an opportunity to get involved at all levels of the game, from getting on the ice, to watching a college hockey game, to watching an NHL game, this year’s event will be a tribute to a long tradition of hockey in the north.

The players are looking forward to the Winter Classic just as much as everyone else. Flyers defenseman Braydon Coburn said that “with something like the Winter Classic, you just want to take it all in. You want to look around and you want to make sure you remember every little moment about it. It’s very, very special, and to be part of it is an honour.”

Fenway Park: 2010 NHL Winter Classic Hockey Game

To give an idea of how big the 2010 NHL Winter Classic  game will be, we can look back to the previous two NHL Winter Classics. The 2008 Classic set an NHL attendance record of 71,217 fans. The 2009 Winter Classic venue was only able to hold 40,818 fans but the demand for tickets exceeded 240,000.

The 2010 NHL Winter Classic will be the fourth regular season game held outdoors in NHL history. Those of you planning on attending better come bundled up. Now matter how anticipated this event is, winters in the north are merciless.
