About The Winter Classic NHL Hockey Games

Sidney CrosbyThe Winter Classic outdoor NHL games are special hockey events that are played outdoors in front of huge crowds. These Winter Classic hockey games are official games and count towards a regular season NHL game.

The first of these regular season outdoor NHL games was played back in 2003 when the Edmonton Oilers hosted the Montreal Canadians at Commonwealth Stadium to a crowd of over 57,000! This outdoor classic hockey game was repeated again in 2008 with the Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabres and again, it was very successful in terms of attendance and TV viewership.

Now most NHL hockey teams are lining up so they too can participate in this special event and to make their own hockey history. 2012 brings us another installment of the Winter Classic game when the Philadelphia Flyers take on the New York Rangers on January 2nd of 2012.
